Buffalo Grove Attempted Murder Suspect Dies of Self-Inflicted Gunshots at Condo

Paul Woebel, age 50 of Buffalo Grove, who was facing attempted murder charges in Chicago, died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds after he shot himself twice at a multi-family condo building in Buffalo Grove Wednesday morning.

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Buffalo Grove responded about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2024 to a report of a possible psychiatric emergency when a third-party called 9-1-1 to a report that a suicidal statement involving a gun was made by Paul Woebel at the 0-99 block of Old Oak Drive in Buffalo Grove.




Firefighters and paramedics staged while police officers from Buffalo Grove attempted to secure the scene. During a tense situation, two shots were fired from the condo apartment unit about 10:45 a.m., and police entered first to secure the scene, then police officers and paramedics found Woebel with two gunshot wounds in his head. A gun was also found at the scene.

Police, who were attempting to secure the scene when the shots were fired, began CPR initially.

Woebel was treated with Advanced Life Support by Buffalo Grove Fire Department paramedics, and was transported to Endeavor Health NCH with extra paramedics on board the ambulance. Woebel was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The Cook County Medical Examiners Office ruled the manner of death a suicide with the primary cause as gunshot wounds to the head.




In the alleged attack on Friday, May 14, 2021, Woebel’s ex-wife suffered serious injuries.

Paul Woebel, allegedly wore a long black wig as a disguise while striking his 42-year-old ex-wife multiple times with a blunt object on the head and body. The attack occurred while she was walking in the block of 500 West Hawthorne Place in Chicago.

Woebel was arrested Monday, June 7, 2021, in the block of 3400 North DuSable Lake Shore Drive (formerly Lake Shore Drive), which is just around the corner from the Hawthorne Place attack scene, and near Belmont Harbor.

Woebel’s most recent hearing was November 25, 2024, and his trial had been scheduled to begin February 4, 2025.
