Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 10:28 a.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2024 to a report of a crash with injuries involving a semi-trailer truck and a sedan at the intersection of Rand Road and Palatine Road in Arlington Heights. Crews were updated that the driver in a Lexus sedan was trapped inside the vehicle after the semi-trailer truck traveled over the Lexus sedan.
Police, first on the scene, confirmed there was entrapment, and subsequently the Fire/EMS call was upgraded to a crash with entrapment assignment by 10:29 a.m. A Bartlett fire administration unit was also on the scene before assigned units were on the scene, and the fire administrator reported the patient in the Lexus was conscious and breathing. Prospect Heights police were also immediately on the scene after the crash.
The first assigned fire crew, Arlington Heights Fire Department Ambulance 2, on arrival reported one vehicle with heavy damage and one person trapped. Engine 4’s crew reported by 10:40 a.m. that the patient in the Lexis was extricated. The patient was transported to Northwest Community Hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.
CARDINAL NEWS learned that the 19 year-old driver in the gray Lexus had just fled from Prospect Heights police officers, and was westbound on Rand Road (US-12 WEST). A witness waiting at a red light in the westbound turn lane of Rand Road to westbound Palatine Road saw the Lexus enter the intersection when she looked right after hearing a screech. A semi-trailer truck driver, eastbound on Palatine Road with no time to stop to avoid a collision, drove the semi-trailer truck directly over the Lexus sedan and was able to stop several yards after the collision. The truck driver was later allowed to pull off eastbound Palatine Road near the Olive Garden restaurant. The Lexus was crushed and pushed onto the median of Palatine Road. The truck driver did not initially report any injuries.
The driver of the semi-trailer truck had just dropped off products at a local grocery store before the crash occurred. No citations were issued to the truck driver.
The gray Lexus had a fake California plate affixed to the rear bumper area. Initially, the reason for the attempted traffic stop was unknown. The license plate displayed “CALIFORNIA” on the top and “DEAD HOMIES” on the bottom.
Eastbound Palatine Road was blocked from Arlington Heights Road to Windsor Drive during rescue, investigation, and vehicle recovery.
