A teen and his dad acted quickly when they were notified by neighbors across the street that their next-door neighbor’s house was on fire. Although their actions weren’t enough to extinguish the fierce fire on the outside wall of an attached garage, their actions may have slowed the progress of the fire enough to stop it from extending inside the next-door neighbor’s house before firefighters arrived.

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 9:53 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2024 to a report of flames and smoke showing from a house from a neighbor across the street in the block of 0-99 East Brittany Drive in Arlington Heights.

Engine 4 on arrival reported a fire on the outside of the garage, and upgraded the call to a working fire by 9:55 p.m. Prior to arrival of firefighters, neighbors next-door to the fire pulled their garden hose to the side of the house and applied water to the fire.

Arlington Heights firefighters from Engine 4’s crew quickly extinguished the fire with a hose line. The fire was spreading across most of the siding on the east side of the house when firefighters arrived, but the neighbors with the garden hose may have slowed the fire enough to keep the fire from extending inside the house before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters immediately entered the interior of the attached garage and the house and confirmed that the fire had not extended inside the house.

Engine 4’s fire lieutenant used a thermal image camera aimed at the wall to find any hot spots that could re-kindle later. Firefighters applied water to a number of hot spots after flames and smoke were no longer visible.

The fire was declared extinguished by 10:11 p.m. When the fire was extinguished, there was visible damage to most or all of the siding, and there was a Groot garbage bin completely melted and burned.
