An Illinois State Police trooper arrived at a crash scene on I-90 WEST just east of Arlington Heights about 4:15 a.m. Sunday, October 13, 2024 and found a black Audi SUV with front-end damage in a right lane of I-90. When the trooper looked around to find the other vehicle, he found the vehicle beginning to burn near a commercial building about 90 feet north of the right shoulder of Interstate 90. The vehicle, a Buick Envoy, was hit from behind on I-90, and its driver lost control of the SUV, which crashed through a chain link fence and a brick wall, and flipped on its side. The driver and passenger had gotten out the burning wreckage, but two Pugs remained in the SUV. Fighting flames and hazardous smoke and vapors, the trooper managed to rescue the two dogs from the windshield he shattered.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), preliminary information indicates that ISP Troop 3 units responded to a two-vehicle personal injury traffic crash on I-90 WEST near Mile Post 71. The driver of Unit 1, a 2011 Black Audi, failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of Unit 2, a 2017 black Buick. The Buick Envoy careened off of I-90, hit a brick wall near a commercial building, then rolled over and caught fire. The driver and passenger in the Buick Envoy were able to exit the Buick Envoy SUV, but two dogs remained inside the burning vehicle. The ISP trooper handling the crash attempted to use his fire extinguisher on the car fire, but wasn’t able to extinguish the fire. The trooper then gained entry to the burning car by kicking out the windshield to retrieve the two dogs and get them to safety.
Mount Prospect and Des Plaines firefighters extinguished the fire involving the Buick SUV. Arlington Heights Fire Department does not routinely respond to incidents on I-90 WEST, east of Arlington Heights Road. Ambulances responded from Mount Prospect and Elk Grove Village fire departments.
The driver of the black Audi, Julian Ramirez, and a 22-year-old male from Carpentersville, was transported by Mount Prospect Fire Department ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Buick, Constance Cox, a 37-year-old female from Chicago, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Other passengers involved in the crash reported no injuries on scene. Patients were transported to Northwest Community Hospital and Alexian Brothers Medical Center.
The dogs were transported by the Illinois State Police to Northwest Community Hospital, where a relative of one of the injured victims, picked up the dogs that had been rescued by the trooper.
