The Lake County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 released the identity of a pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle Friday night, October 18, 2024 as Emily Wegleiz, age 30, of Vernon Hills.
On Monday, October 21, 2024, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy results indicate that Ms. Wegleiz died from Blunt Force Injuries as a result of the crash.
Police from Vernon Hills, and firefighters and paramedics from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded about 10:46 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2024 to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle in the northbound lanes of Milwaukee Avenue near Ernie’s Wrecking Service, 909 South Milwaukee Avenue.
Upon arrival police, firefighters and paramedics discovered a body located in the northbound lanes with a small red 4-door sedan with a broken windshield and front-end damage nearby.
Vernon Hills police officers were first on the scene and began lifesaving attempts, including the use an AED monitor/defibrillator. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection paramedics also assessed and treated the woman, but she was unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of a red 4-door sedan stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. The sedan sustained front-end damage and windshield damage. The did not initially report any injuries.
According to witnesses the woman was attempting to cross Milwaukee Avenue. The woman’s identity was not initially released.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was assigned to the scene to assist the Vernon Hills Police Department with the investigation of the crash.
Milwaukee Avenue is a four-lane roadway with an additional left turn lane from the northbound lanes to a gas station on the west side of Milwaukee Avenue. The Speed Limit on Milwaukee Avenue near the scene is 45 MPH according to Google Maps Street View images captured July 2024. There are not street lights on Milwaukee Avenue. There is illumination from gas stations on both sides of Milwaukee Avenue. There are no crosswalks in the area, except at Woodlands Parkway, about 900 feet north of the crash scene.
Milwaukee Avenue was shut down in both directions between Woodlands Parkway on the north side of the crash scene and Route 45, Jamestown Lane, Port Clinton Road on the south side of the crash scene.
