Fatal motorcycle crash on Algonquin Road near Thornwood Lane/Thoreau Drive in Schaumburg YouTube Tips ⓘ
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 1:48 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2024 to a report of a motorcycle crash with a vehicle at Algonquin Road and Thorntree Lane/Thoreau Drive North in Schaumburg near unincorporated Palatine Township. The motorcyclist was thrown from the motorcycle into a grass area.
Police were first on the scene and reported that the motorcyclist was unresponsive with labored breathing.
The first fire crew on arrival reported heavy damage involving the vehicles and a motorcyclist down. Paramedics transferred the patient with life-threatening injuries to a hospital that was not disclosed.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office, an Asian male, age 22 of Schaumburg was pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m.
Initially, there was no indication from officials regarding the cause of the crash, but observations at the scene yield some hints about what may have happened.
The motorcycle impacted the passenger side of a silver Mazda 4-door sedan, causing significant damage to the car, which also caused roof deformation, and produced the appearance that the Mazda was hit by another 4-wheel vehicle, but the Mazda was actually hit by a motorcycle. A debris field also existed at the crash scene. The observations of severe damage to the Mazda indicated that the Mazda was hit by the motorcycle, while the motorcyclist was apparently traveling at an extremely high speed.
Markings on the road surface also indicated that the impact occurred near the right two lanes of eastbound Algonquin Road. Since the severe damage to the Mazda is on the passenger side, this might indicate the driver of the Mazda was attempting a left turn from westbound Algonquin Road to southbound Thoreau Drive. The motorcyclist then hit the Mazda on the passenger side, and was thrown from the motorcycle. The Mazda apparently spun around after the impact. Again, no information about the mechanism of the crash has been released by officials.
