CARDINAL NEWS | McHenry County Sheriff: Illegal Pass by Dodge Challenger Hellcat Driver in Head-on Crash that Killed 3

Woodstock Fire/Rescue District firefighters and paramedics and McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded about 12:02 p.m. Sunday, October 27, 2024 to a report of a crash with entrapment and a vehicle fire in the block of 13400 Davis Road near Woodstock in Dorr Township.

When sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and paramedics arrived, they discovered a black Dodge Challenger fully engulfed with fire and completely off the edge of the road near a woods. They also discovered a silver Volvo near the shoulder edge Davis Road with two victims trapped inside the Volvo. The crash was located on Davis Road between Dean Street/US-14 and Ponderosa Avenue.

Firefighters and paramedic crews began to work on both vehicles — initially to extinguish the fire in the Dodge Challenger, and begin extrication and assessment of people in the silver Volvo.

Two people were found deceased in the black Dodge Challenger, and the driver was found deceased in the silver Volvo SUV. A child was extricated from the Volvo with serious or critical injuries, transported to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital by ambulance, and then airlifted by a LifeNet helicopter to Loyola Medicine’s Pediatric Emergency Department. The driver of the Volvo was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two people in the black Dodge Challenger were discovered deceased after the fully-involved fire was extinguished. The Dodge Challenger also hit a tree after crashing with the Volvo. The wreckage of the Dodge Challenger was also tangled in tree branches. Both vehicles were severely damaged. Also, a Jeep was hit by debris from the crash, but initially the two people traveling in the Jeep did not report any injuries.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. The identities of the deceased were initially withheld.

Davis Road is a two-lane rural highway with narrow, soft shoulders. The Speed Limit is 40 MPH, there are no curves near the crash scene, but there are a few crests and dips along Davis Road. A fresh skid mark from a wide tire was visible across the double yellow center line of Davis Road.

The severity of the vehicle damage, the severity of the vehicle fire, and the existence of a debris field hints to the likelihood of a high-speed, head-on crash; however officials did not initially announce that the crash was a head-on crash.
