According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, a teen driver traveling eastbound on Northwest Highway (US-14 EAST) turned left in front of an oncoming motorcycle and an oncoming passenger car, hitting both the motorcycle and the other car.
The Arlington Heights Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred at the intersection of Northwest Highway and Waterman.
Tuesday, October 29, 2024 around 6:30 p.m., Mount Prospect Police Department and Fire Department personnel responded to a traffic crash reported at Northwest Highway and Waterman, a common border between Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights. It was quickly determined impact occurred on a section of roadway within Arlington Heights’ jurisdiction.
Preliminary information indicates a blue 2010 Genesis coupe was traveling eastbound on Northwest Highway approaching Waterman. A red 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound on Northwest Highway approaching Waterman. A silver 2020 Hyundai Elantra was also westbound, behind the motorcycle. The 16-year-old driver of the Genesis made a left turn and struck both the motorcycle and Hyundai.
First responders found the motorcycle rider unresponsive and began lifesaving efforts. Mount Prospect police officers deployed an AED and started CPR. Mount Prospect Fire Department personnel arrived took over patient treatment. It was determined the rider suffered fatal injuries and was beyond medical care. He was pronounced at the scene.
Northwest Highway is currently closed in both directions at the Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect border while police continue to investigate the crash.
The Arlington Heights Police Department is being assisted in this investigation by the Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) specialized investigative unit. Mount Prospect Police personnel assisted with traffic control.
The 16-year-old driver was cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way While Turing Left and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. An initial court date for the traffic violations was set for NOV 21, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. in room 210 (Rolling Meadows Courthouse) A preliminary review excluded the presence of alcohol or drug impairment with respect to the at-fault driver.
Police are still in the process of notifying family of the motorcyclist. Identification will not be released at this time. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine a Cause and Manner of death. A final report usually takes 6-8 weeks to complete.
INITIAL CARDINAL NEWS REPORT …
Police from Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect; and firefighters and paramedics from Mount Prospect responded about 6:29 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2024 to a report of a crash involving a motorcycle and two cars at the intersection of US-14 (Northwest Highway) and Waterman Avenue at the border of Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect near Culver’s.
The motorcyclist was thrown from the motorcycle, and was unresponsive and not breathing on the ground. Passersby began CPR before police and paramedics arrived.
Police, firefighters, and paramedics on arrival discovered two passenger cars with severe front-end damage in the intersection, and a damaged motorcycle on the parkway at the northwest corner of Northwest Highway and Waterman Avenue in Arlington Heights.
The motorcyclist was treated on scene and in the ambulance, and transported to Endeavor Northwest Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Initially, no information was available regarding whether any occupants of the cars were transported by paramedics.
A witness said a teen was heard saying, “it happened so fast.” Then his parents told him to stop talking.
The MCAT-STAR van arrived on the scene about 8:30 p.m.
The crash occurred in front of the Arlington Heights Culver’s restaurant at Northwest Highway and Waterman Avenue.
Initially, US-14 WEST (Northwest Highway) was shut down at Dale Avenue. Soon after the MCAT-STAR van arrived, US-14 was closed in both directions.
