Eighteen people, including two drivers, were transported by EMS to five different hospitals Wednesday, September 4, 2024 following a “mass casualty” two-vehicle crash involving a McHenry County inmate van that was transporting prisoners from jails in Lake County to McHenry County (Jenna Barnes/WGN News). A McHenry County Sheriff’s Office inmate transport bus enroute to McHenry County Jail from Lake County Jail was involved in a crash at the intersection of Route 120 and Hainesville Road in Lake County, Illinois at approximately 1:29 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

The white bus was occupied with two McHenry County Correctional Officers and 15 Lake County inmates and one McHenry County inmate for a total of 16 inmates. All occupants of the bus were transported to multiple area hospitals at this time. Grayslake Police Department is handling the crash investigation.

Initial crash investigation indicates the crash occurred while the transport bus was traveling westbound on Route 120, and the driver of a black Chevy SUV traveling eastbound turned left turn in front of the van in an attempt to travel northbound on Hainesville Road.

Both vehicles had significant front-end damage, especially the inmate transport bus because it may have also hit a wood utility pole.




Approximately 20 ambulances were assigned to the crash scene as part of a MABAS EMS Box Alarm to the 4th Level.

Fire radio traffic indicated that the initial fire department response was at 1:01 p.m.

Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics responded about 1:01 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024 to a report of a crash with multiple injuries at Route 120 and Hainesville Road in Hainesville.

A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm on Box #26-99 activated by 1:11 PM. Staging was designated at the Mobil gas station at the northwest corner of Route 120 and Hainesville Road.

A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm on Box #26-99 to the Second Level activated at 1:28 p.m.

A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm on Box #26-99 to the Third Level at 1:35 p.m.

A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm on Box #26-99 to the 4th Level at 1:45 p.m.

The EMS Box Alarm was struck out at 2:05 p.m.

Fire/rescue ambulances from Lake County and McHenry County area transported 18 patients to area hospitals. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office did not indicate the conditions of the patients, but a release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office indicated all inmates were transported with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.




All of the ambulances transporting the inmates were followed by either Grayslake Police Officers or Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies. All of the inmates remain in custody and under the supervision of Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies/Corrections Officers, McHenry County Sheriff’s Corrections Officer, or Grayslake Police Officers.

Two McHenry County Sheriff’s employees and the driver of the SUV were transported via ambulance to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
