Mount Prospect Police officers responded initially to RecPlex and then to the BP Gas Station, 800 South Elmhurst Road, Des Plaines, for a report of a person who had been shot. Police officers arrived and learned that the victim, a 33-year-old male, had been shot multiple times while attending a barbecue north of the RecPlex, 420 West Dempster Street, Mount Prospect. The gunshot victim was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where he was treated for his wounds. The gunshot wounds were initially believed to be non-life threatening. No other people reported being injured.
The initial investigation revealed the victim was attending a barbecue in the park area north of the RecPlex. Next, two people, known to the victim, approached him. The two people began arguing with the victim and then produced a handgun and started shooting at the victim. The victim was shot multiple times and fled toward the BP Gas Station. Both offenders, who were described as male white with blonde hair, fled the area in a white older model Chevrolet conversion van in an unknown direction.
Crime Scene Technicians processed the scene, and with the assistance of the Rolling Meadows Police Department K9, multiple shell casings were located. Police searched the area north of RecPlex in the grassy area near the high-tension power lines.
A few witness saw the victim sitting on the ground in front of the front door into the convenience store at the BP gas station. Two people reported seeing some blood, but also said that he didn’t seem to be seriously injured. People near the gas station thought the victim may have been stabbed, and said they didn’t hear any gun shots.
