Arlington Heights police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 9:39 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2024 to a report of a blown ComEd backyard pole transformer in the block of 900 North Beverly Avenue in Arlington Heights. Witnesses reported two loud booms and momentary fire or arcing. There was no active fire or arcing after the transformer blew. High wind gusts (up to 39 MPH) were occurring in the area connected to nearby former Hurricane Helene, which was classified as a Post-Tropical Cyclone and located over southwest Indiana at the time of the power outage.
Over 400 ComEd customers were without power. ComEd arrived on the scene by 9:56 p.m., and the crew worked on Oakton Street within minutes. The number customers without power was isolated to 44 near the location of the blown transformer by about 10:10 p.m. Friday.
The initial area were customers were affected was roughly from Euclid Avenue to Palatine Road between around Douglas Avenue and Dryden Avenue.
