Arlington Heights police officers successfully protected the streets from a dangerous driver when they located him and stopped him after he allegedly fled from a crash scene. A suspected DUI driver at times driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road crashed into a vehicle in the southbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road at Oakton Street, and allegedly fled the scene of the crash Saturday night.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 10:07 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2024 to a report of a hit-and-run crash with injuries at Arlington Heights Road and Oakton Street in Arlington Heights.




Arlington Heights Fire Department Squad 2’s crew on arrival reported a single vehicle at the scene with moderate crash damage in the southbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road at Oakton Street. After assessment by paramedics, the victim driver of the hit-and-run refused medical transportation by paramedics.

A witness reported that the driver that was fleeing the crash scene, was driving a dark Honda Pilot minivan, and fled northbound on Arlington Heights Road.

Another witness observed the minivan traveling northbound on Arlington Heights Road just south of Palatine Road at a high rate of speed. The witness also heard the sound of a flat tire or damaged tire slapping on the pavement.

A witness also reported that the driver drove through a red light at Palatine Road, causing several drivers to sound their horns at the reckless driver.




Alert police officers headed northbound from the crash scene, searched for the fleeing driver, and found the driver in a damaged dark gray Honda Pilot northbound on Arlington Heights Road near Hintz Road about two miles from the crash scene. There was a successful traffic stop after the fleeing driver turned east on Hintz Road and then south on Pine Avenue.

The driver was cooperative and polite with the officers at the traffic stop on the southbound lane of Pine Avenue.

The vehicle was found with a shredded passenger side front wheel on his Honda Pilot. The wheel rim of the passenger rear tire was also damaged. There was also fender damage on the passenger side front. During the traffic stop, police officers showed the driver that he was driving on a damage passenger side front tire.

The driver was a non-English speaker, but a police officer at the scene was able to communicate with the driver at the traffic stop, and provide instructions for a field sobriety test.

The driver apparently failed the field sobriety test, and was arrested and handcuffed at the scene. The driver, a male adult suspected of DUI, was then transported to the Arlington Heights Police Station for further investigation and processing. The driver’s Honda Pilot was towed to a police holding area.
