CAR-SURFING: Reckless driver passes the front of Raising Cain’s restaurant in Arlington Heights with a passenger on the vehicle’s trunk on Monday, August 5, 2024 at 10:40 p.m. (CARDINAL NEWS).

Night life, including car-surfing, at Raising Cane’s, 225 East Palatine Road in Arlington Heights has been a little on the wild side several nights recently.

Town and Country Center appears to be thriving lately, especially with the recent grand opening of the new Amazon Fresh store, but there are a few concerns by residents who have observed speeding vehicles in the parking lot near Raising Cane’s, along with rowdy groups gathering in the lot.

One “neighbor” posted on the Ring Neighbor app Sunday, August 4, 2024, that a duo of teenage or college age boys passed the vehicle owner’s van several times, and then threw a Coke at the van, causing the windshield to be “unbelievably sticky” and possibly cracked.

Drivers of vehicles are often seen speeding in the parking lot at night, especially along the parking lot lane from Walgreens to Raising Cane’s. Drivers of vehicles are also often seen speeding through the parking lot westbound or eastbound perpendicular to the parking lanes.

Monday night, August 5, 2024, a driver was observed driving recklessly with a teen or young adult unsecured on top of the trunk of the vehicle — or car surfing.

In a 2008 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published October 17, 2008, researchers reported on 58 car-surfing deaths from incidents occurring from 1990 to 2008.

The 2008 study discovered 58 newspaper reports of car-surfing deaths and 41 reports of nonfatal injury. Most reports of injury were found in U.S. Midwest and Southern newspapers (75%), largely involving males (70%) and youths aged 15–19 (69%). A majority (58%) of reported car surfing incidents ended in death.

In one reported case that occurred in May 2001, a male aged 19 years from Massachusetts fell off the back of a car driven by an 18 year-old friend. Observers told police that the boy was kneeling on the trunk of the vehicle in an attempt at car surfing and appeared to lose his grip before sliding off the back. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 15 mph at the time of the fall. The boy had massive head and spinal cord injuries, was hospitalized, and died 3 days later.

The drivers of vehicles and/or owners of vehicles involved in these type of tragic incidents could face criminal charges and million dollar civil wrongful death lawsuits.
