The Lake County Coroner’s Office announced Thursday evening, August 8, 2024 the identity of an Arlington Heights man killed when he was hit by a car on Route 12 in unincorporated Wauconda. The deceased has been identified as 39-year-old Pablo Campuzano-Reynoso of Arlington Heights. On Thursday, August 8, 2024, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy results indicate that Mr. Campuzano-Reynoso died from Blunt Force Injuries as a result of the crash.
Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating the fatal evening crash involving a pedestrian in unincorporated Wauconda.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and Wauconda firefighters and paramedics responded about 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2024 to a report of a car vs pedestrian crash at Route 12 and Old Rand Road in unincorporated Wauconda.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and discovered a 39-year-old man from Arlington Heights down in the roadway, critically injured without a pulse. A Lake County Sheriff’s deputy performed CPR on the man, and the man regained a pulse. He was transported and treated with Advanced Life Support with extra paramedics on board the Wauconda Fire District ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced deceased a short time later at the hospital.
Preliminary investigation shows a Toyota Camry was headed northbound on US-12 WEST, driven by a 68-year-old man of McHenry. The male pedestrian from Arlington Heights was attempting to cross the divided highway, US-12, on foot for an unknown reason. The driver of the Toyota did not see the man, and struck him as he drove northbound.
The driver of the Toyota was uninjured, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
A witness reported seeing an apparent intoxicated person walking on Rand Road and then possibly walking on Lake Shore Drive and then Blakely Parkway south of the scene on US-12. A second ambulance was requested at 9:17 p.m. in case the reported intoxicated person was discovered, and was found injured. Last night, there was no information available indicating that the driver of the Toyota was initially missing at the scene.
Wauconda police officers and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies on scene for traffic control and search/rescue.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy of the man.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
US-12 is a 4-lane divided highway with a grass median. The US-12 WEST (northbound) has a dedicated left turn lane and a dedicated right turn lane at the intersection with Old Rand Road/Lake Shore Drive. The intersection is controlled by a traffic signal and there are no marked crosswalks at the intersection.
US-12 EAST has a dedicated left turn lane, but no dedicated right turn lane to Lake Shore Drive.
The Arlington Heights man was struck south and east of the intersection.
The Speed Limit on US-12 (Route 12) is 55 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images captured September 2022. There is a left-hand curve for US-12 WEST (northbound) south of the intersection with Old Rand Road/Lake Shore Drive.
Initially US-12 WEST (northbound) was closed at Old McHenry Road. Then US-12 closed down in both directions from Old McHenry Road to Ivanhoe Road for the extended crash investigation.
