Firefighters from Arlington Heights and neighboring communities stopped a rapidly advancing fire in a 3-story townhouse building that may have started in an attached garage. The fire advanced from the garage into the living space, but firefighters stopped the majority of the fire within 30 minutes of the report of the fire. No injuries were reported to people or pets. However, one person was evaluated for smoke inhalation, and fish remained in an aquarium in one of the townhouse units.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 8:58 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2024 to a report of an attached garage fire at a townhouse in the block of 2100 Crambourne Way in Arlington Heights.
Police first on the scene reported a large fire in the garage, and the fire was upgraded to a Working Fire, following the police on-scene report, and before firefighters arrived. Engine 3’s crew, while responding, also reported seeing a smoke header.
Engine 3’s crew reported two townhouse garage units fully involved by 9:02 p.m. Engine 3’s crew used a deck gun on the fire, and requested a Box Alarm (extra alarm).
Rolling Meadows Truck 15 arrived as the second fire suppression unit from their fire station on Algonquin Road just east of Route 53. They immediately raised their main ladder and connected to a separate hydrant from Engine 3’s connection. Tower 1 was assigned to move up close to the scene via Hyde Street by 9:05 p.m.
Engine 2’s crew was assigned for a second hose line by 9:06 p.m. Firefighters immediately entered the townhouses, which consist of two floors of living space above the garages.
A MABAS Division 1 Box Alarm was activated by 9:07 p.m. Firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers were assigned from Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, and Schaumburg were assigned to the scene. The Rolling Meadows truck was assigned on automatic aid for the initial dispatch, and Des Plaines and Schaumburg response may have been from the “Working Fire” assignment.
Firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers were assigned from Glenview, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich and Wheeling were assigned to stand by in Arlington Heights Fire Stations.
Engine 3’s crew provided an updated report by 9:10 p.m. indicating fire extension into the living space with an attempt to position Tower 1 on Hyde Street.
A fire crew reported heavy fire under lightweight construction while crews inside, including Rolling Meadows Truck 15’s crew, were performing searches for residents inside the building. The fire spread rapidly up wood stairs and wood decks at Level 2 and Level 3 above the attached garages at Level 1.
According to radio communications, Des Plaines Squad 63’s crew was also working interior, possibly inspecting a hole in the roof and/or other assignments.
A third hose line was established by 9:17 p.m. A fourth line was possibly established at the south side of the building by about 9:27 p.m.
Also at 9:17 p.m. a resident was evaluated by paramedics for smoke inhalation. Initially, there were no reported EMS transports between 9:00 p.m. and midnight.
The fire was declared knocked by 9:25 p.m. and firefighters began to transition to overhaul while chasing some hot spots. Firefighters were also inspecting the attic and roof around 9:30 p.m. and later. There was a hole in the roof, apparently caused by the fire. A fire engine from Schaumburg was assigned to respond about 9:30 p.m. This was in addition to a Schaumburg ladder truck that was on the scene.
Possibly, there was damage to four townhouse units with most of the damage held two townhouse units.
Also, the smoke from the townhouse fire may have caused at least one activated fire alarm at a nearby business.
Fire investigators and police investigators specializing in fire investigations worked overnight gathering evidence.
A De-Con operation was set up about 10:08 p.m. for firefighters exposed to smoke and toxic gases.
MABAS Division 1 Box Alarm 10-32 was struck out at 10:08 p.m.
