Dan Pogorzelski or the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is concerned that battery materials from the electric bikes may leech into the water, and that is definitely not healthy.

According to NBC Chicago, Chicago resident Glenn Rischke and other people have been been retrieving Divvy bikes and electric scooters from the waters of Lake Michigan.

“In 5 outings we’ve pulled 53 bikes…in maybe 2,000 yards of lakefront,” according to Rischke.

According to NBC Chicago, Rischke is working with the Alternative Anglers Association, a citizen-led group, to retrieve the dumped bikes.

Rischke discovered the Divvy bike while swimming in Lake Michigan.

Anyone who sees a Divvy Bike or pile of Divvy bikes in the water is urged to report the discovery to 311.

Each bike that is retrieved from the water is either returned to the fleet, if possible, or used for spare parts, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Lyft, which manages the program for the City of Chicago. Lyft is a mobility company (Nasdaq: LYFT) that manages ride-hailing, vehicles for hire, motorized scooters, a bicycle-sharing systems, and food delivery in the United States and Canada. The company formerly managed a rental car service. Lyft headquarters is in San Francisco.

The electric bikeshare program serves patrons in the City of Chicago and the City of Evanston.

Divvy has been criticized for overcharging and for poor bike maintenance online on social media platforms and website message boards, such Tripadvisor, Facebook, and Reddit.

The NBC Chicago report did not provide a specific location where the bikes were located in the water, but the report by Lexi Sutter was recorded at the Divvy bike station at Michigan Avenue and Oak Street, and background video appeared to be at the north shore nearby.

The water source for Arlington Heights is Lake Michigan water near Evanston, and is treated by the City of Evanston. Arlington Heights also maintains six deep wells for emergency purposes.
