Palatine police officers were conducting foot patrol on Friday August 9, 2024 at approximately 10:00 p.m. in the 1800 block of North Green Lane as part of an ongoing enhanced Police Foot Patrol Initiative when they observed multiple suspicious individuals. One individual was masked, and all were in dark clothing congregating near one of the apartment buildings. When the suspicious individuals noticed the officers, they attempted to flee in various directions. One subject was seen reaching toward his waistband. After a short foot pursuit and physical struggle, Palatine police officers were able to detain 20-year old Juan Romero, who was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun.
Romero, of the 1800 block of North Green Lane Palatine, was arrested and brought to the Palatine Police Department. The case was reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney and Romero was subsequently charged with …
one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a class 4 Felony;
one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a class 4 Felony; and
one count of Resisting a Peace Officer, a class A Misdemeanor.
On August 10, 2024 Romero was transported to the Cook County Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago for a detention hearing. Romero was detained and remanded to the Cook County Jail. His next court hearing is scheduled for August 13, 2024 at the 3rd District Court House in Rolling Meadows at 9:00am in room 108.
