Also, anticipated at the Town & Country shopping center is Chase Bank, and Burlington — both moving from the north side of Rand Road to the south side of Rand Road (US-12) in the Uptown Shopping District of Arlington Heights.

Burlington is expected to move to Town & Country Center at 601 East Palatine Road by the end of 2024 from their existing location at Arlington Plaza at the northwest corner of Arlington Heights Road and Rand Road. Burlington is moving over to the previous Marshalls location, after Marshalls moved to the Northpoint Shopping Center in September 2018. The location was temporarily an experimental Dick’s Warehouse Sale location, but was closed down.

The Chase bank branch is planning to move from the Northpoint Shopping Center to the location which was previously an AT&T phone store, and before that, a Gap store. AT&T moved from the southwest corner of Rand Road and Palatine Road to the Southpoint Shopping Center, which is located at the southeast corner of Rand Road and Palatine Road.

Chase plans to demolish the former 40,000 square-foot AT&T building and build a smaller branch less than 6,000 square feet at 585 East Palatine Road. The proposed new building represents a 46 percent decrease in floor compared to the Northpoint location. Initial plans include two drive-thru lanes, which will be one less than the existing location at Northpoint.

Initial plans indicate a unique design … timber frame construction, instead of steel frame. Solar panels are also planned for a roof installation. There are also “green elements” that will pass storm water to underground water vaults.

The Chase bank plans were approved at the Village Board meeting January 16, 2024.

The Town & Country Center property was an open field with pheasants and other wild birds and a small woods near Palatine Road until 1981 when the property was developed as Town & Country Mall. Pheasants ran and flew low along backyards of homes as far south as Thomas Street and Olive Street from the open field, which is now Town & Country Center. In the 1960s, Palatine Road was the approximate northern border of populated Arlington Heights.

Town & Country Mall was initially an enclosed mall that included a K-Mart, Service Merchandise, Casual Corner, Garibaldi’s, Just Pants, Radio Shack, Swensen’s Ice Cream, WaldenBooks, and a six-screen movie theater (originally Essaness, and then Cineplex Odeon).

In the shopping center’s lifetime as an indoor mall, there was also a Women’s Workout World, Old Country Buffet, Lord & Taylor Clearance and other small stores.

Dominick’s and Walgreens were eventually added to the west end, and the shopping center was eventually converted from an indoor mall to a large strip mall. The addition of Best Buy and Marshalls also marked a new era as the mall was about to convert to a large strip mall in the early 2000s. Today the shopping center is a successful strip mall.
