Search efforts in southern Lake Michigan resumed Saturday morning for two missing swimmers from Elk Grove Village and Mount Prospect, who jumped into Lake Michigan in Northwest Indiana, resumed Saturday morning.

Firefighters, divers and rescuers responded about 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2024 to a report from group on a boat near the Lake Michigan shoreline near Whiting, Indiana that three swimmers from the boat were in rough waters.




Twelve people were on board the boat, among a group that including adults and juveniles. The outing descended into chaos when one man jumped off the boat to swim to shore, but began to struggle, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The person controlling the boat attempted to approach the swimmer that jumped from the boat, but the attempt failed because of strong winds and waves.

A second man jumped into the water to try to rescue the first swimmer, but both swimmers began to struggle.

Next, a third man put on a life jacket and jumped into the water to attempt to rescue, but rough waters separated him from the other two struggling male swimmer.




The two initial swimmers went under the water and never resurfaced. Rescuers were notified that two swimmers went under, and the third swimmer was rescued and transported to an area hospital. Then efforts turned toward searching for the two submerged swimmers.

The third swimmer was treated for mild hypothermia and released.

Rescuers called off the search for the two swimmers late Friday around nightfall. The search resumed early Saturday, July 6, 2024
