Police from Lindenhurst and firefighters and paramedics from Lake Villa responded about 11:36 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2024 to a report of a bad crash at Grand Avenue (Route 132) and Prospect Drive in Lindenhurst.
Rescuers on arrival discovered a single-vehicle crash with the car on fire with severe impact damage. The car’s driver hit trees and possibly a utility pole after leaving Grand Avenue at a curve in the road. There was a significantly long off-road path after the driver left Grand Avenue, crossed oncoming traffic lanes, and hit stationary objects on the north side of Grand Avenue.
Two crash victims were extricated by 11:55 a.m.
Firefighters were working on extricating two additional victims; however, two of the four victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The two surviving patients were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where they were listed in critical condition.
The Lindenhurst Police Department is investigating the fatal crash with the assistance of the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT).
The initial investigation on scene indicates that before the crash, the driver was eastbound on Grand Avenue and failed to stay on the road at a curve and struck a large tree.
Grand Avenue is a four lane highway with curbed parkways and sidewalks on both sides. There is a curbed grass median that the driver would have had to bounce over before crossing the oncoming lanes (westbound lanes) of Grand Avenue (Route 132). The Speed Limit is 40 MPH on Grand Avenue and a right-hand curve on Grand Avenue is clearly marked with a diamond warning sign (according to Google Maps Street View images captured August 2023). The driver continued straight on a right-hand curve, apparently.
