Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump was rushed off the stage just minutes into his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13, 2024, after popping noises or gunshots were heard. The shots were fired about 6:11 p.m. EDT. While Donald J. Trump was speaking, the gunshots were heard and then people started screaming and security and secret service agents rushed in to shield Trump. There were initial reports that Trump had blood on the side of his head and above his ear. There appeared to be a superficial wound above his right ear, and blood streaks across his right cheek coming from the area of his right temporal region of his head. Also, there was an apparent blood streak running from the right side of his head to an area under his lower lip and chin.
A report breaking at 7:30 p.m. EDT indicated a shooter was dead and a person attending the rally was dead.
GUNSHOT WOUNDS
Donald Trump – wound to right ear, grazed by bullet or impact by shrapnel glass from the teleprompter
Male, adult rally attendee – killed by shooter
Two rally attendees – critically wounded
Shooter – killed by Secret Service counter-assault team member
At the time of the apparent shooting, Trump flinched and reached for the area of his right ear, even before the crowed ducked down behind him. At the same time apparent shots were heard from the shooter, and then return fire shots were heard from the Secret Service Counter-Assault Team (CAT). Initially, people near the podium were confused where the shots were originating, according to witness reports.
Secret Service Agents on stage were at his side within 4 seconds, and another perimeter off-stage Secret Service agents were at Trump’s side within 8 seconds. The Secret Service agents huddled and surround Trump.
Shortly after they surrounded Trump, Secret Service agents (apparently) could be heard saying “Shooter down, we’re good to move” (move Trump close to a vehicle near the stage).
Secret Service agents rushed Trump off stage, and Trump, while standing, held up a clenched fist at the podium while Secret Service agents remained in a protective huddle before he was transferred into an armored black Chevy Suburban extraction/evacuation vehicle. Trump told the Secret Service agents “Wait, wait,” and then he held up his clenched fist to the crowd. Next, he was transferred to the modified Chevrolet Suburban.
David McCormick (R-PA) witnessed a person wounded on the stage behind Trump. He said he saw a large male wounded on the stage behind Trump with people attempting to stop the bleeding with shirts. McCormick said the sound of the shots appeared to be a small caliber weapon (www.davemccormickpa.com).
“Shooter down” may have been heard after assault on Trump. There is unconfirmed speculation that Secret Service may have responded and neutralized a shooter.
According to the US Secret Service, Donald J. Trump is safe.
TRUMP STATEMENT ON TRUTH SOCIAL
“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
