Police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 2:47 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2024, to a report that a co-worker of a Davey Tree Expert Company crew was shot at 801 South Braintree Drive in Schaumburg. The 911 caller advised the 911 operator that the male offender, Michael Lang, retreated into the garage of the residence and closed the door after shooting the victim, according to the Schaumburg Police Department.

Police officers located the victim, a 66 year old male of Hanover Park, lying on the front yard. Police officers rescued the male from the yard and brought him to paramedics waiting nearby. The gunshot victim was given emergency medical treatment by Schaumburg Fire Department paramedics, and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Police officers surrounded and secured the residence attempting to contact Michael Lang. The investigation revealed Lang is a resident at 801 South Braintree Drive, and the only person in the home during the incident, according to the Schaumburg Police Department. The male gunshot victim and his three co-workers are employees of Davey Tree Expert Company which were hired by the homeowner of the property. The altercation started when Lang exited the residence yelling at the victim and the three other workers. Lang was shouting at the workers about making too much noise, and told them to leave. The workers were in the process of gathering their equipment to leave when Lang retrieved a handgun from his vehicle parked in the driveway. Allegedly, Lang then pointed the handgun at the victim and fired one round into his abdomen, according to the Schaumburg Police Department.

The Schaumburg Police requested the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) to assist in resolving this incident safely with SWAT personnel. After six-plus hours of a standoff between police officers and SWAT personnel and the suspect, Michael Lang surrendered peacefully into police custody. Michael R. Lang was transported to the hospital for treatment and later transported to the Schaumburg Police Department for further investigation. No other persons sustained injuries as result of the incident.
