Upon arrival police, firefighters and paramedics discovered a vehicle upside down in the pond at the northeast corner of Main Street and Garland Road with one occupant in the vehicle.
Wauconda Fire District firefighters and paramedics worked rapidly to extricate the male driver from the vehicle. The victim was removed from the passenger side of the vehicle within 10 minutes after firefighters and paramedics arrived. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was discovered to be a 38 year-old male. Initially his identity was not released.
Firefighters and divers searched the pond to confirm that there were no other victims from the vehicle in the pond. No other victims were found.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) is working with the Wauconda Police Department to investigate the crash.
The Speed Limit on Main Street is 35 MPH according to Google Maps Street View images captured November 2022. Main Street and Garland Road both have one lane available in each direction. The intersection is an oblique T-type intersection with Garland Road ending at Main Street. There is a stop sign for Garland Road, and there are no stop signs on Main Street. A failure to negotiate the left-hand curve on northbound Main Street, for whatever reason, could cause a vehicle to travel straight into the retention pond at the northeast corner of the intersection.
Witness reported the driver was traveling northbound on Main Street, struck the curb at Garland Road, and flipped and landed upside down in the vehicle in the retention pond. The vehicle was a 2010 Ford Edge.
At least two Good Samaritans attempted to rescue the driver before police and firefighters arrive, and suffered injuries initially believed to be minor. Two additional ambulances were assigned to the scene to assess their condition. The Good Samaritans refused EMS transportation to a hospital.
A heavy rescue wrecker was assigned to assist with removal of the vehicle in case it was needed for the rescue operation.
