Kane County Judge Salvatore LoPiccolo was assigned to the pre-trial detention hearing of Daniel B. Pederson on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 in place of a Lake County judge, and Jud LoPiccolo granted the state’s petition that Pederson be held in the Lake County Jail pre-trial.

“This defendant is dangerous. He is mentally unstable, has homicidal ideations, mass killing ideations and is fixated on Honorable Michael Nerheim and this courthouse.”

— Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris

Daniel B. Pederson was previously convicted in 2016 of making a terrorist threat directed at the Lake County courthouse, and was again arrested for threatening the courthouse.

On June 14, 2024, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office became aware that a man (later identified as Daniel B. Pederson) was walking in Chicago’s Riverwalk area, and passed a note to a security guard working at a Riverwalk restaurant. The note indicated there would be a mass shooting with military precision at the Lake County courthouse. Initially officials indicated that the note also included threatening remarks directed at a Lake County Judge and a Chicago Police Officer assigned as a task force officer to the FBI.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division launched an investigation. On June 27, 2024, the suspect returned to the Riverwalk area and was spotted by the security guard who previously received the note. The security guard contacted the Chicago Police Department, and the man was located, and taken into custody. The male suspect was identified as Daniel B. Pederson, 42, of the 200 block of E Cullerton Street, Chicago. After Pederson was positively identified, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives worked with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and obtained an arrest warrant for Pederson for one count of ‘Threatening a Public Official’ (Class 3 Felony).

On June 28, 2024, members of the Sheriff’s Warrants Team took custody of Pederson in Chicago. He was then transported to the Lake County Jail where he remained held pending his first court appearance.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office on Saturday morning, June 29, 2024 announced the intention to file a petition to detain Pederson pre-trial.

Official announced that additional charges were possible.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Chicago Police Department and FBI Chicago Field Office for their collaboration and assistance.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
