Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded at 10:22 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2024 report of a fire in the garage attached to the house in the block of 600 Woodhollow Lane. Arriving within five minutes of the call, firefighters found a two-story residence with an attached garage. Heavy flames in the garage were spreading to the house, and there were reports of one occupant unaccounted for, according to the Village of Buffalo Grove. Buffalo Grove Tower Ladder 25’s crew reported seeing a smoke header while responding to the scene. Fire command upon arrival reported a 2-car attached garage fully-involved with fire.
At least two vehicles were burning on the driveway.
The fire incident was upgraded to a “Working Fire” response at about 10:27 a.m.
Firefighters began an aggressive interior attack with hose lines to both the garage and house while starting a search for any trapped occupants. During the search, one unidentified occupant was located in the single-family residential building. The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and release of identification is being withheld pending the Lake County Coroner’s examination.
The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes, but the fire department continued work at the scene, along with the State of Illinois Fire Marshal’s Office, investigating the cause of the fire. The State of Illinois Fire Marshal was requested to respond to the scene, and arrived about 12:45 p.m. The investigation is being led by the Buffalo Grove Fire Department in conjunction with the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department was assisted by area fire departments including Arlington Heights, Lincolnshire, Lindenhurst, Lake Forest, Long Grove, Wheeling, Prospect Heights, Glenview, Wauconda and Rolling Meadows as well as the Buffalo Grove Police and Public Works Departments. During firefighters operations, a severe water main break with buckling occurred in the west parkway of Woodhollow Lane just north of Farrington Drive. The water main break did not appear to significantly affect firefighting operations, or make a difference regarding the life lost and fire loss property damage.
A portion of the north wall of the garage burned through, leaving only the frame 2×4 wood studs standing.
A house to the south of the fire scene sustained some damage from the heat of the fire.
