Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Elk Grove Village responded about 12:01 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2024 to a report of a house fire in the block of 900 Wilshire Avenue in Elk Grove Village.
Firefighters and police officers received a report that flames and smoke were visible from the house and that a person was still inside. While responding, firefighters attempted to find out what part of the house the victim might be located.
Police officers, who arrived first, attempted to make entry into the home, but entry was not possible because of thick smoke, flames and heat.
Firefighters on arrival reported flames showing from the front of the house. By 12:14 a.m.
Firefighters on interior attack, reported heavy smoke conditions, but were able to find a resident of the home quickly. Cindy Goodwin, age 62, was discovered in a front room and was removed by 12:15 a.m.
Cindy Goodwin was transferred by paramedics to an ambulance that was parked south of her home in a neighbor’s driveway. Paramedics began Advanced Life Support treatment, but Cindy Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:41 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Firefighters completely searched the home twice for any possible additional victims, and no additional victims were discovered.
Firefighters, who were exterior, reported fire at the rear of the house. Fire also extended to the attic and broke through the roof.
The fire was extinguished by about 12:30 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service Office at O’Hare International Airport, the Air Temperature was 64.9°F at 11:51 p.m. Thursday, and winds were from the east at 7 MPH. Relative Humidity was 66% (dew point: 53.1°F) with overcast skies. Air Pressure was 1013.9 mm Hg. Weather conditions were similar for the next three hours with Relative Humidity rising, and Air Pressure dropping slightly.
