Recent graduates of Schaumburg and Rolling Meadows high schools have been identified as two people killed early Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 290 in Chicago that occurred while one of the vehicles was disabled.

Schaumburg High School graduate Shaelyn M. Sherwood, age 18, of Hoffman Estates, and Rolling Meadows High School graduate Erik C. Cox, age 18, of Rolling Meadows, were killed Sunday morning in a crash on I-290 near Damen Avenue that also injured three others people. Eric was killed while he was changing a tire on the expressway.

Both of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene or shortly after arrival at a nearby hospital.




Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred just after 3:00 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-290 near Damen Avenue (west of Paulina Street). Initially, Illinois State Police did not provide details regarding how the crash occurred.

At least one of the victims was outside the vehicle at the time of the fatal crash, according to the Illinois State Police.

The three others injured in the crash were transported to nearby hospitals, but their conditions were not initially disclosed.
