Arlington Heights Village Trustee Nicolle Grasse has been named the new Illinois State Representative of the 53rd District to replace the seat of then-State Rep. Mark Walker. His seat was vacated in May 2024 when he was appointed to be the State Senator of the 27th District to fill the vacancy of Senator Ann Gillespie when she stepped down to lead the Illinois Department of Insurance. Grasse works as a hospice chaplain based in Palatine, but lives in Arlington Heights, as does State Senator Mark Walker. Grasse has been an enthusiastic participant in Greater Palatine Area Democrats’ events over the years. Grasse’s district includes the southeast part of Palatine and much of Rolling Meadows, and parts of Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, and Mount Prospect.
A committee composed of the Democratic Committeepeople whose townships are part of the 53rd District gathered on June 5, 2024 to interview six candidates to be appointed to the seat.
The committee considered the candidates’ professional credentials, elected office experience, Democratic voting record, and history of volunteering for their local township Democratic organizations.
Also, State Representative Grasse (D) will be on the November 2024 ballot to compete for election against a Republican candidate.
Mary Beth Canty (D), who was also an Arlington Heights Village Board Trustee, is the Illinois State Representative for the 54th District.
