Firefighter/paramedics from Palatine and Arlington Heights and Illinois State Police troopers arrived to find a pickup truck upside down, and a maroon or purple sedan facing the wrong-way near the inside lane of southbound Route 53 Spur. The male driver of the pickup truck was able to get out of the pickup truck before firefighters and paramedics arrived.
The driver of the white Ford Ranger was transported by Palatine Fire Department paramedics to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.
Initial investigation indicates both vehicles were northbound on the Route 53 Spur when the driver of a maroon or purple Toyota Scion failed to slow down and crashed into the rear and driver’s side of a white Ford Ranger that was slowing in traffic congestion. The pickup truck bed cap on the white Ford Ranger popped off as the pickup truck rolled onto the roof and came to rest at the beginning of the ramp the northbound Route 53 Spur to eastbound Lake Cook Road. Debris and contents from the bed of the Ford Ranger were spread across lanes of the northbound Route 53 Spur.
The male driver of the Toyota Scion lost control, crossed the grass median, and came to rest facing the wrong way near the inside lane of the southbound Route 53 Spur.
Initially no information on citations or charges for the driver of the Toyota Scion.
All lanes of the northbound Route 53 Spur were shut down due to vehicles and debris for about one hour.
All lanes on the Route 53 Spur were re-opened by 4:37 p.m.
