Illinois State Police troopers, Arlington Heights police officers, Palatine police officers, and Arlington Heights firefighters and paramedics responded about 1:13 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2024 to a report of a serious, single-vehicle rollover crash with possible entrapment in the block of 1700 Wilke Road in Arlington Heights, after a vehicle rolled and cartwheeled off of the Route 53 expressway.
When police arrived on the scene, they discovered two male occupants outside a severely damaged Mitsubishi vehicle that veered off the northbound lanes of Route 53, south of Palatine Road near Lancelot Lane in Palatine. Police first on scene reported the driver appeared to be in bad shape.
Arlington Heights Fire Department paramedics treated two trauma patients. One patient was transported with life-threatening injuries to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, and one patient was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
A witness reported the vehicle cartwheeled and rolled several times after veering off Route 53. The vehicle came to rest in the middle of a service road extension off of Wilke Road near an Arlington Heights, Palatine border. A skid mark showed the vehicle left Route 53 into Palatine just before the beginning of the exit ramp to eastbound Palatine Road. The debris path of the crashed vehicle from Route 53 to the service road near Wilke Road in Arlington Heights was approximately 400 feet long. Debris included suspension pieces, two suspension springs, two headlights, pieces of plastic and metal, a car radio, and contents that were inside the car.
Illinois State Police troopers managed the incident reporting and the tasks related to their crash scene jurisdiction. Arlington Heights and Palatine police officers were first on scene.
