A 4.8 magnitude earthquake recorded 3.7 miles east southeast of Califon, New Jersey was felt in New Jersey and New York — New York City — about 10:23 a.m. EDT Friday, April 5, 2024. Initially, no major damage or disruptions have been reported in New Jersey or New York.
The epicenter was about 40 miles west-southwest of Times Square in New York City.
At the USGS reporting center online there were 146,024 responses in 952 zip codes in the area. The USGS Community Internet Intensity Map showed the most intense reports indicating Strong shaking with Light damage.
The map indicated lighter intensity reports in Baltimore, Scranton, Philadelphia, Trenton, Washington D.C., Waterbury, Hartford — affecting that states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut beyond New Jersey and New York.
Local media reports indicate residents reported shaking furniture and floors.
“We have activated our State Emergency Operations Center. Please do not call 911 unless you have an actual emergency,” said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.
