April M. Reins, a female jail inmate in Lake County jail who is awaiting court proceedings for the charges of Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Aggravated Battery/Use of a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, and other charges, including drug-related charges, is accused of attempting to escape the Lake County Sheriff’s Office headquarters during her appearance there for an investigation on February 22, 2024.
April Reins, age 27 of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, asked to use the bathroom, and allegedly attempted to escape via the bathroom ceiling. Her escape was prevented, but in the process, a Lake County Sheriff’s Office sergeant suffered an injury that required medical treatment.

April Reins, while allegedly fleeing in a stolen vehicle, struck a police officer near Starbucks on Grand Avenue between Oakwood Avenue and Green Bay Road, as a male pedestrian in her vehicle fled on foot. Both were taken into custody while treated and transported for possible drug overdoses. The police officer was also transported with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Waukegan responded about 10:09 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024 to a report of a crash with injuries near Starbucks, 3300 Grand Avenue in Waukegan.
A second ambulance was dispatched on information that the female driver of a vehicle may have overdosed, and that a police officer was hit by a vehicle as a pedestrian.
A third ambulance was requested at 10:21 a.m.
Waukegan police officers checked to investigate the sighting of a possible stolen vehicle, when the driver of that vehicle, April Reins, attempted to flee and struck police vehicles and other vehicles that were in the parking lot of the Starbucks.
While the male passenger fled the car, April Reins allegedly opened her door, and struck a police officer, eventually knocking him to the ground.
April Reins was captured after a foot chase, and the male pedestrian was also captured. The male and the female were transported by Waukegan Fire Department paramedics to a nearby hospital.
The police officer was also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of an injury or injuries that were initially believed to be non-life-threatening.
