The Prospect Heights Police Department announced that Sunday March 24, 2024 around 4:00 a.m., two suspects gained entry into a Prospect Heights resident’s garage. They used a garage door opener that was left in a vehicle located in the driveway of the residence. One suspect as you can see by the still photo was seen pointing a firearm at the interior door that leads inside the residence.
According to the Prospect Heights Police Department, suspects committing vehicle burglaries in the Prospect Heights community are considered armed and dangerous.
The police department warns: DO NOT confront suspects.
If you hear or see something suspicious, call 9-1-1 immediately. Always keep valuables and garage door openers inside your home, do not leave them in your vehicle.
SECURITY TIP …
If you park your vehicle outside, and you have programmed a remote garage door opener button device supplied by the automobile manufacturer, test to see if the garage door opener remote button in your vehicle functions while the vehicle is turned off. In some vehicle models, especially older models, the remote garage door opener button in the vehicle remains active even while the vehicle is turned off. While you are sleeping, an offender can break in to your vehicle and open your garage door, and burglarize your garage and/or home living space.
If your vehicle garage door opener button remains active while your vehicle is not running, consider de-programming the vehicle’s button and getting a handheld remote that you can bring in your house at night. Or consider a method to power off your garage door opener when you’re sleeping at night or otherwise not attentive to your vehicle and garage.
Also, keep your interior garage door from the garage to your home’s living space locked.
