Police from Island Lake and firefighters and paramedics from Wauconda Fire District responded about 7:09 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2024 to a report of a head-on crash at 27555 State Road Island Lake — on State Road between Mack Drive and Williams Park Road.
The crash involved a Nissan Rogue and a Honda Accord. .
The first crew on arrival reported two vehicles with moderate to heavy damage. Battalion Chief 34 upgraded the call to a crash with entrapment by 7:13 a.m.
A third ambulance was requested to respond to the scene by 7:16 a.m. A Nunda Township Fire ambulance was assigned, and was released later at 7:45 a.m. The third ambulance was likely assigned to stand by for the hazardous nature of extrication operations.
There was a quick extrication (completed by 7:34 a.m.) of a female adult in a white small SUV (Nissan Rogue). Extrication was continuing on the second vehicle at 7:34 a.m.
The patient from the first vehicle was transported by Ambulance 342’s crew to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center and was en route to the hospital by 7:34 a.m.
Extrication of a male adult was complete on the second vehicle — a silver or champagne color Honda Accord — by about 7:40 a.m.
Ambulance 341’s crew was en route with their patient to Level 1 Trauma Advocate Condell Medical Center by 7:55 a.m.
There were no other occupants in the vehicles.
State Road was blocked with a partial closure at Darrell Road and a complete closure at Williams Park Road. Wauconda police officers assisted Island Lake police officers by blocking State Road at Mack Drive.
The road block continue for an extended on-scene crash investigation for approximately one additional hour after patient were transported from the scene.
Initial investigation indicates that the 20 year-old male driver of a silver or champagne color 1996 Honda Accord 4-door from North Chicago was traveling westbound on State Road (Route 176) when he crossed the center line for an unknown reason.
A woman in her 50s from Wauconda was traveling eastbound in a white 2018 Nissan Rogue, and was unable to avoid being hit by the Honda Accord.
The head-on crash resulted in a split scene with large and small debris across the road between the two vehicles. The white Nissan Rogue came to rest, hitting a guardrail at the eastbound shoulder near the driveway to Rock Star Concrete and Atlas Concrete Lifting at 27555 Illinois Route 176.
The Honda Accord came to rest on the westbound shoulder across Illinois Route 176, contained from going off the road by a guardrail.
State Road (Illinois Route 176) is a two-lane rural highway (one lane in each direction) with a moderate-size hard shoulder on each side. The crash scene was also surround by guardrails on both sides. The Speed Limit on Illinois Route 176 (State Road) is 50 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images captured October 2022.
In the immediate vicinity of the crash scene there are no curves or hills on Route 176. The nearby driveway to the construction companies on the south side of Route 176 connects to Route 176 at an oblique angle.

Skies were bright with sunlight, but mostly cloudy.
The pavement was dry with an air temperature of 28°F at 6:52 a.m. at Chicago Executive Airport’s NWS station.
Air temperature was 25°F at 6:51 a.m. at Chicago/Waukegan Regional Airport’s NWS station.
There was no information indicating whether there was frost on the road.
