Illinois State Police, local police and firefighters and paramedics from Northbrook responded about 2:24 a.m. and 2:31 a.m. February 27, 2024 to a report of a crash involving a semi-trailer truck on the exit ramp from northbound I-294 to Lake Cook Road in Northbrook (Mile Post 52.5).
Police, firefighters and paramedics on arrival discovered a FedEx semi-trailer truck with a tandem trailer with the tractor and first trailer well-involved with fire. The truck driver was lying in the roadway. All firefighters and paramedics that were initially on the scene began to give aid to the injured truck driver before fighting the the truck fire.
Illinois State Police troopers were administering CPR when the firefighters and paramedics arrived. Deerfield, Northbrook Northfield police officers were also on the scene. A Northbrook police officer responded when the officer heard an explosion in the area about 2:22 a.m.
A Prospect Heights water tanker (tender) was assigned to the scene about 2:45 a.m. Contents in the first trailer were on fire as well as the first trailer and the tractor truck (“power unit”).
The truck driver was transported to Glenbrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The exit ramp was partially opened for traffic and the truck was towed from the scene by about 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Illinois State Police said the impact of the crash caused the driver to be thrown from the vehicle near the exit ramp to Lake Cook Road just before 2:25 a.m. The driver was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries (CBS Chicago). YouTube Tips ⓘ
