At least two teens, maybe four, were captured, and a gun recovered in Vernon Hills about 4:15 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024. The teens were apprehended after Vernon Hills police officers spotted a white BMW 328i matching the description of a vehicle and occupants that were wanted after the white BMW was reported stolen in Des Plaines.
Several Vernon Hills police officers surrounded the 2011 white BMW 328i with their marked and unmarked SUVs in a felony stop in front of Athletico at 555 East Townline Road (Route 60) in Vernon Hills.
Felony stops are traffic stops that involve an elevated risk of violence, and involve multiple police vehicles. In a felony stop, police set up to surround the vehicle, but are careful to prevent being in a position where crossfire from one side of the traffic stop could wound a police officer on the other side of the traffic stop. Police officers then approach the vehicle using a ballistic shield to reduce the risk of being shot. In order to take control, police also give the driver and occupants instructions to minimize the risk of any of the occupants getting a shot off or fleeing on foot.
Since area police were informed by Des Plaines Police Department that at least one of the teens may have been armed in the vehicle, Vernon Hills police officers chose the felony stop option.
The felony stop was successful without any injuries reported. At least one gun was recovered at the scene, and the gun was placed in an evidence bag.
The license plates were immediately removed from the white BMW at the Vernon Hills scene because the plates didn’t match the license plates belonging to the BMW. The license plates belonged to another victim’s vehicle.
Des Plaines police on Saturday morning, February 3, 2024 beginning around 12:00 p.m. were on the lookout for a stolen white 2011 BMW 328i or unknown BMW model with tinted windows and silver rims occupied by two or three male, Hispanic juveniles.
There were at least two teens, possibly four, apprehended at the scene. Police did not initially release how many teens were arrested and charged, if any were charged.
Two of the juveniles were described as “missing, endangered” Saturday morning. They were also described as …
#1) a male/Hispanic, 5’7″ 130 LBS, black hair brown eyes, medium haircut, wearing a black hoodie and black pants, armed with a handgun, and
#2) a male/Hispanic, age 13, black hair, brown eyes, medium haircut, wearing a black hoodie and black pant, 5’6″ 160 LBS.
There may have been a third juvenile — not described.

Initially, the vehicle and suspects were spotted at the Walmart at Grand Avenue and Hunt Club Road in Gurnee around 12:00 p.m. Then they were spotted near the Athletico and Walmart on Townline Road (Route 60) west of Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills.
