The shooting occurred on August 9, 2023 at approximately 3:56 a.m.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the block of 5800 Wild Plum Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake for reports of multiple gunshots fired, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival on scene, deputies located three deceased adult females, an adult female seriously injured, and an adult male, identified as the shooter, seriously injured from gunshot wounds. The shooting victims were also identified as family members.

The deceased female victims were identified as Chang Hee Song, 73, Yuna Song, 49, and Lauren Smith-Song, 32. Their deaths were ruled a homicide, according to McHenry County Coroner Michael Rein

The deceased male shooter was identified as Jean Song. His death was ruled a suicide.

Upon further investigation, investigators concluded that the shooting was a familial domestic situation that escalated from a verbal dispute to physical violence. The male shot at all four females, killing three and wounding one, before shooting himself. He later died in the hospital. The fourth wounded female survived the incident, and has since been released from the hospital.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office stated that deputies did not have any history of interaction at this residence prior to this incident.

During the progression of the investigation, police discovered that the shooter, Jean Song, was most likely suffering from a mental health crisis. Jean Song possessed a valid FOID card and Illinois Concealed Carry License.
