Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service
Chicago/Romeoville, IL
256 AM CST Sat Jan 6 2024

.SHORT TERM… Issued at 256 AM CST Sat Jan 6 2024

Through Sunday night…

Key Messages:

* Steady snowfall persists through daybreak with additional accumulations of up to 2 inches

* Intermittent poor quality snow is expected through this evening

* Fog may develop this afternoon and persist through the evening

After an impressive earlier start to the snow late in the evening which yielded 1″ of snow here at our office in Romeoville, steadier snow has since expanded in coverage across much of the area, with the exception being northwest Indiana where dry air continues to win out. An axis of higher rates up to 0.5″ per hour is centered along I-55, including areas generally between I-39 and I-57 and south of I-88. By daybreak these locales could have upwards of 3-4″ of snow on the ground with lesser amounts outside of this region. Where temperatures have fallen below freezing snow has readily accumulated on pavement, creating hazardous travel conditions. This has been messaged via a Special Weather Statement that was recently updated that goes through 7 am CT. If you have to be out on the road through daybreak this morning plan on increased travel times and slick conditions.

Intermittent light snow is expected to continue through the morning hours as the trailing vort max moves overhead, especially north of I-80 and east of I-39. There is a weak signal for localized lake enhancement which could result in an additional 1 inch of snow in those areas. Otherwise the overall character of the snow becomes poorer quality (snow grains/flurries) as mid- level drying pivots overhead off and on through the evening. The poorer quality snow and temperatures warming above freezing will limit any additional accumulation for most areas. Toward this evening a trailing 700 mb vort moves east across central Illinois which could bring additional chances (30-40 percent) for snow, mainly south of I-80.

The other weather message of the day is the potential for reduced visibility in fog. Winds become light and variable today as the center of a weak surface low moves overhead. With increased low-level moisture and fresh snowfall, suspect that fog will begin to develop by this afternoon and continue into the evening where any melting occurs. The coverage may be dependent on how warm temperatures get and the degree of melting for localized higher dewpoints.

Cloud depths begin to narrow heading into Sunday which should help reduce the potential for snow though a few spotty snow showers/flurries can`t be ruled out through early afternoon (10% chance). Highs will be a tad warmer in the mid 30s.
