Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Wauconda Fire District responded about 8:15 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2024 to a report of a head-on crash at Route 12 and Russell Avenue, Volo.. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located two vehicles with heavy damage, involved in a head-on crash on Route 12 between Ellis Drive and Russell Avenue near Kanzler Properties and Kanzler Construction.
The driver of a Mitsubishi Outlander sustained critical injuries, consisting of a fractured spine and brain bleeding. The driver of the Ford Mustang also sustained serious injuries. A front-seat passenger in the Ford, a 23-year-old man who was not wearing his seat belt, sustained significant injuries, including a symptom of not being able to feel his legs.
The two drivers and the passenger were transported to area hospitals, each via ambulance. An open container of alcohol was located in the Ford Mustang, and impairment does appear to be a factor in the crash.
A preliminary investigation indicates a Ford Mustang, driven by a 24-year-old man from Fox Lake, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 12. The driver of the Ford Mustang struck the southbound Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by a 36-year-old woman from Deerfield, head-on.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
