Weather forecast January 02 2024 for Arlington Heights, O’Hare International Airport YouTube Tips ⓘ
Apparently the actual low temperature (27°F) might be a little warmer than the forecast low of 25°F for Tuesday. Regardless this morning’s low will be about +10°F above the normal low temperature for January 2, 2023 (17°F).
The high temperature (forecast 34-35°F) might beat the normal high (31°F) by about +4°F.
Low clouds are clearing from west to east for a period early this morning, before low clouds redevelop across northern Illinois into this afternoon.
There is a slight chance of a period of drizzle and freezing drizzle Tuesday afternoon and evening, primarily north of I-80.
There is also a chance (20%) of flurries and snow showers Wednesday afternoon.
A distinct clearing line continues to work its way eastward across the I-39 corridor early this morning. This clearing line is expected to clear the Chicagoland area prior to daybreak Tuesday morning, so a expect a mainly sunny start to the day. However, regional satellite imagery already indicates an area of redeveloping low-cloud cover across western Iowa Tuesday morning.
Weather Radar in northeast Illinois was clear.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM… Issued at 330 AM CST Tue Jan 2 2024
Through Wednesday…
Key Messages:
– Low clouds clearing from west to east for a period early this morning, before low clouds redevelop across northern IL into this afternoon.
– A low chance exists for a period of drizzle and freezing drizzle this afternoon and evening, primarily north of I-80.
– Chance (20%) of flurries and snow showers Wednesday afternoon.
A distinct clearing line continues to work its way eastward across the I-39 corridor early this morning. This clearing line is expected to clear the area prior to daybreak this morning, so a mainly sunny start to the day is looking to be a good bet for the area. While this is the case, regional satellite imagery already indicates an area of redeveloping low-cloud cover across western IA at this time. This appears to be associated with an enhanced areas of warm advection ahead of mid-level disturbance currently shifting over the Mid-Missouri Valley region. Forecast guidance, most notably the HRRR and RAP indicate that this area of stratus will redevelop into our area this afternoon as the mid-level disturbance continues its eastward trek across IA, and I see no reason why this will not occur given current trends.
The main concern we will have to keep an eye on with this developing low stratus this afternoon and evening is the potential for any drizzle or freezing drizzle. Forecast soundings suggest cloud depths may become marginally deep enough (~3000 ft) to support the possibility of some patchy areas of drizzle and/or freezing drizzle for a period this afternoon into the evening as a second sheared out impulse drops southward into the area just in the wake of this afternoons disturbance. However, confidence in any precipitation remains very low at this time. In spite of this, in collaboration with WFO MKX and DVN, we have added a slight chance mention into the forecast for areas generally along and north of I-80. If any drizzle threat materializes, the current thinking is that travel impacts would remain limited as temperatures hover around freezing. Nevertheless, anytime icing is possible, it is something worth staying up to date with.
Cloud cover is likely to persist overnight tonight and on Wednesday. As a result, a low diurnal trend in temperatures is expected over the next 36+ hours, with readings generally ranging from the mid 20s to the mid 30s.
Another quick moving mid-level impulse will shift southeastward across our area Wednesday afternoon. This is expected to drive an accompanying cold front across the area through the day. It may also foster some afternoon and evening flurries and snow showers across the area as low-level lapse rates steepen and push cloud heights into the DGZ. Little to no accumulation is expected, though some lake effect snow showers into Wednesday night could produce some minor accumulations into parts of northwestern IN. For more on that reference the long term discussion below.
