A classic dense fog scenario over widespread high-water-content snowpack that is gradually melting appears to be unfolding Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures are in the mid to locally high 30s and dew points primarily above freezing as well, with weak-to-calm boundary layer flow. Some fog with 1/4 mile or less visibility is occurring roughly I-80 and south. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect at 3 PM for south Chicagoland.
There is high confidence that dense fog will developing north area wide, as well. The Dense Fog Advisory for northern Chicagoland starts at 6 PM, but could be adjust earlier.
