A fire in the roof of a single-story strip mall building where Old Chicago Red Hots restaurant is located caused enough damage to require temporary closure of the business.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Antioch in Lake County responded about 5:21 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2024 to a report of heavy smoke at Old Chicago Red Hots, 573 West Route 173 (Grand Avenue) in Antioch. A passerby reported there was heavy smoke coming from the roof. Police on arrival reported fire showing on the roof.
The main part of the fire was extinguished within minutes, but firefighters checked for extension and hot spots, and overhauled the fire scene for about two hours. After extinguishing the main source of the fire, firefighters inspected the roof, and immediately ventilated smoke from the building.
Parts of the ceiling needed to be pulled down to check for extension of fire. Some of the ducting may also have been pulled down by firefighters.
The fire in the restaurant was in a strip mall type building — 140 feet by 100 feet. Neighboring units in the strip mall were also affected by smoke.
At the request of fire command, a health inspector from the Lake County Health Department, and an employee of the Antioch Building and Code Enforcement Department were requested to the scene, which is standard practice for fires involving restaurants.
The fire department is investigating whether the fire was caused by a problem with the kitchen hood and exhaust ducting or another cause. Fire investigators from Antioch Fire Department, Newport Township Fire Protection District and the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District are working on the investigation.
