The Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District command van was struck while responding to a crash at Algonquin Road and Old Sutton Road in Barrington Hills at 8:38 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2024.
A second ambulance was requested to the of the first crash, and while the Battalion Chief was responding in a Ford Expedition command SUV, he hit head-on by another vehicle.
Battalion Chief 38 called in to Northwest Central Dispatch that he was involved in a crash on Route 62 just east of Sutton Road. He requested an ambulance for this second crash scene, and then an additional ambulance for the second crash scene.
A total of four ambulances were assigned to the two crash scene. Ambulance from Carpentersville and West Dundee fire departments were assigned as the third and fourth ambulances to the scene.
The Battalion Chief was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with serious but apparent non-life-threatening injuries.
Two occupants in a Honda CR-V that crashed with the Ford Expedition were transported to Ascension Saint Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.
The driver of the Honda CR-V was traveling eastbound on Algonquin Road (Route 62), and is reported to have crossed the median and crashed into the fire command vehicle head-on. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District command SUV was traveling westbound on Route 62 was a 2019 Ford Expedition.
The emergency lights and siren on the Ford Expedition were activated at the time of the crash, according to the Barrington Hills Police Department.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was assigned for an on-scene crash investigation, and the crash remains under investigation involving the Barrington Hills Police Department and Lake County MCAT.
Algonquin Road was closed in both direction between Old Sutton Road and Dundee Road (Route 68) until about 2:00 p.m.
Barrington Hhills Police Department received traffic control assistance from the Hoffman Estates Police Department, the Algonquin Police Department, and Hanover Township Emergency Services.
The status of the crash victims of the first crash were initially unknown.
