Timothy Mumford, age 74, of Johnsburg is the inmate that died at McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility, Tuesday, Decwember 5, 2023, according to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
Mumford had been detained since he was taken into custody after a standoff that began November 14, 2023 near the intersection of Hamlin Drive and Fillmore Road in Johnsburg. He was accused of shooting at this wife. He was allegedly knowingly firing a gun inside his residence at a common wall that separated the room where he was located from the room where his wife was located. His wife was able escape without any gunshot wounds.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT responded, and after a nine-hour standoff with police, Mumford was taken into custody.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s reported at 7:54 p.m. Tuesday night that on December 5, 2023, around 4:00 PM, a 74-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in a single-occupied booking cell at McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility.
Corrections officers and Woodstock Fire/Rescue attempted life-saving measures without success, and the Mumford was pronounced deceased at the scene.
In compliance with Sheriff’s Office protocol and state law, the McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team was requested to conduct the investigation. Identification is pending notification of next of kin. According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, additional information will be provided once available.
