Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating a morning fatal traffic crash on Route 173 (Rosecrans Road) near Kilbourne Road in Newport Township, near Zion.
Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Newport Township were dispatched about 8:45 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2023 to a traffic crash with injuries on Route 173 west of Kilbourne Road in Newport Township. Upon arrival Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located three vehicles with heavy damage. Upon hearing radio communications on the Lake County Sheriff’s radio talk group, additional ambulances were dispatched.
The driver of the Nissan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of a Hyundai was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with minor injuries. The driver of the Tesla was uninjured and refused medical treatment and transportation by paramedics.
Preliminary investigation shows a Nissan Altima, driven by a 68-year-old woman of Burlington, Wisconsin, was traveling westbound on Route 173, approximately ½ mile west of Kilbourne Road. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Nissan veered into the eastbound lanes of traffic, into the path of an eastbound Hyundai Sonata, driven by a 62-year-old man of Arlington Heights. The Nissan and Hyundai collided head-on. A 27-year-old woman of Chicago, driving a Tesla Y eastbound, took evasive action to avoid the collision, but drove into an embankment on the side of the road, causing damage to the Tesla.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team. Route 173 is a two-way rural highway with a painted center double line and moderate width shoulders. The Speed Limit is 50 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images captured August 2023. The crash scene was not located near any curves, but there is a slight crest in the roadway near the crash scene location — possibly obscuring visibility or partially obscuring visibility of oncoming traffic. Also there are several dips and crests along the roadway.
Route 173 was closed between Kilbourne Road and 21st Street near the Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve east of Route 41.
