The Gurnee Police and Fire Departments are set to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of three individuals and one police officer in two separate incidents at the upcoming Gurnee Village Board Meeting on Monday, December 4, 2023. Authorities will be recognizing their actions as demonstrations of exceptional courage and quick thinking. The three civilians performed heroically at a crash scene on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. The Gurnee police officer performed heroically on Thursday, November 9, 2023.
Nov. 1, 2023 Crash with Rescue by Three Citizens
On Wednesday November 1, 2023, at approximately 7:45 a.m., an urgent situation unfolded at the intersection of Route 132 and Lawson Blvd in Gurnee, Illinois in Lake County. Responding to a minor two-vehicle traffic crash involving a Chrysler Minivan and a BMW X3, Gurnee officers were alerted to the presence of injuries while they were en route to the crash scene. The incident worsened when the female BMW driver was injured by a secondary crash. She was assessing the damage outside her vehicle, when a third vehicle crashed into her vehicle, and pinned her between her vehicle and the third vehicle. She suffered severe injuries when she was pinned between the two vehicles.
According to the Gurnee Police Department, the first responders upon arrival were met with three extraordinary individuals who saw the crash scene while they were on their way to work. The police department explained that the three individuals demonstrated remarkable composure and medical expertise. They swiftly assessed the gravity of the situation. They collaborated seamlessly, and applied tourniquets to control the injured woman’s bleeding, ensuring her stability until officers and paramedics arrived.

Nov. 9, 2023 Crash with Rescue by Gurnee Police Officer Kassandra Canadzic
Also being recognized at the Gurnee Village Board meeting is Officer Kassandra Canadzic, who will be presented with the Life Saving Award for her actions on Thursday, November 9, 2023.
At 10:56 p.m., Officer Canadzic’s patrol vehicle was rear-ended by a suspected DUI driver. Despite the severity of the collision, Officer Canadzic immediately called for help. After calling for backup and exiting her vehicle, she rushed to check on the occupants of the other vehicle, which had caught fire due to the collision.
Despite the flames intensifying, Officer Canadzic managed to rescue an unresponsive female from the burning vehicle, while coordinating efforts with a bystander. The actions included unbuckling the seatbelt and carrying the driver from the passenger side to safety. With swift actions, she ensured the well-being of the passengers in the burning car and cautioned others to stay clear of the escalating danger.
