Zion Fire and Rescue and Zion Police were dispatched on September 23, 2023, for a report of 5-year-old that was not breathing in the block of 2100 block of Gilead. When Police arrived on scene, they located a father and a mother administering CPR to the child as directions were provided by the Emergency Dispatch Center. Police officers took over the emergency care until Zion Fire Department paramedics arrived and provided treatment. Fire and Rescue then transported the 5-year-old to Vista East Medical Center where the child was pronounced deceased in the emergency room.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the Hospital.
The deceased is identified as 5-year-old Kyrie Burns, of Zion. On September 25, 2023, an autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy results indicate that Kyrie died from Asphyxia.
The Zion Police department conducted a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the child’s death. The father and mother were fully cooperative throughout the entire process. Evidence at the scene and a postmortem autopsy conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s office confirm that the child’s death was a tragic accident, and no foul play is suspected.
