Police from Arlington Heights responded about 7:06 a.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2023 after a security agent reported that an offender unlawfully entered a condominium building lobby in the block of 100 South Evergreen Avenue around 4:00 a.m. The condominium building security agent called 9-1-1 at 7:06 a.m. to report the unauthorized person had entered their locked lobby overnight, and without permission, rummaged through an office desk.
Responding police officers met with the security agent and a condominium board representative, and discovered the unlawful entry was captured on an internal video surveillance system beginning around 4:00 a.m. A male offender, wearing a black mask, black hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white gym shoes entered a resident-only restricted area. The suspect had what appeared to be a brace on his right hand, and was carrying a black backpack. Surveillance images show the suspect enter the secure area pushing a bicycle. He sat at the office desk and removed items from various drawers, placing them in his backpack and pockets. The suspect left prior to being discovered.
Police did not initially describe how the offender was able gain entry into the locked lobby.
Just after 7:30 a.m. another 9-1-1 call was received from another caller, and Arlington Heights police officers were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person in the block of 200 East Golf Road in a strip mall near Lover’s Lane. Police received a report that the suspicious person was observed pulling on doors of businesses closed after hours. The suspect was described as wearing a black face mask, carrying a backpack, and riding a bicycle.
Another group of police officers arrived to the area near the strip mall, and located the suspect, who was still in the shopping plaza. Police officers were aware of the suspect description at the downtown condominium provided by the other group of police officers, who had viewed surveillance images of the suspect on South Evergreen Avenue near downtown Arlington Heights. The person detained generally matched the physical and clothing descriptors previously shared. An officer from the South Evergreen investigation drove to Golf Road and identified the detained suspect as the same person that was captured on video. The suspect was arrested. A search of the detained person discovered items reported missing from South Evergreen Avenue. The suspect made a spontaneous utterance admitting to taking those items from the condominium building.
Arlington Heights police detectives joined the investigation and known case facts were reviewed with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Felony Review team. The offender is charged with felony Burglary, and was detained in the police department’s lock-up pending a bond hearing Thursday morning, August 31, 2023.
The block of 100 South Evergreen Avenue includes condominium buildings, single-family residences converted to multi-family residences, and single-family residences. Similar multi-floor condominium buildings are also located in the 100 blocks of South Dunton Avenue and South Vail Avenue.
