Zion Police Department responded about 2:53 p.m. and about 3:40 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023 to a report of complaints of gunfire near the block of 2100 Hebron Avenue in Zion. Initially, no arrests occurred.
The next day Zion Police Department received a report about 1:06 p.m. July 30, 2023 in the same area from a resident that was concerned about the recent gunfire — and also noticed that despite the heat index of 85°F, two males were wandering around in the alley masked with the hoods of their sweatshirts drawn over their heads.
When Zion police officers arrived, two males fled from the alleyway towards the roadway and were encountered by additional responding police officers. The males then doubled back toward the alley — one producing an unserialize polymer P80 9MM handgun, and the other a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9mm handgun.
The Zion Police Department thanks the members of the public for reporting suspicious circumstances that oftentimes leads to arrest and the removal of firearms from dangerous hands. All arrestees are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The males tossed the handguns into a trash can, and fled into an apartment unit in the same block. Officers in pursuit took them into custody without any further resistance or incident. Both handguns were recovered. The juveniles were connected to the apartment unit that they had fled into, but the adult resident told officers that the juveniles were already not welcome there, and did not have permission to enter or remain there on that date.
Both juveniles were charged with felony counts of …
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon based on concealment,
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon for not possessing a concealed carry license,
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon for not possessing a Firearm Owners Identification card,
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon for possessing a firearm under the age of 21, and
Resisting a Peace Officer — a misdemeanor count.
Both juveniles were transported to the Robert W. Depke Juvenile Complex Center in secure custody. The Zion police department does not have information as to whether or not they remain there after the transfer of custody, according to design police.
