Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Grayslake Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics responded about 9:57 p.m. August 25, 2023 to a traffic crash with injuries on Route 137 at Route 45, unincorporated Libertyville near Doe’s Motel and Sweatshop. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived first and located a motorcyclist with critical injuries. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies began CPR before Grayslake Fire Protection District paramedics arrived.
The driver of the motorcycle was treated with Advanced Life Support, and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with life-threatening, critical injuries. The driver of the Chrysler was not injured. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
Preliminary investigation shows a 2010 Chrysler sedan, driven by a 26-year-old man of Round Lake Beach, was traveling eastbound on Route 137. The driver of the Chrysler was attempting to make a left turn onto the ramp leading to Route 45 SOUTH. The driver of the Chrysler turned left, directly into the path of a westbound 2010 Yamaha motorcycle driven by a 56-year-old man of McHenry. The driver of the motorcycle was unable to avoid the collision, and struck the Chrysler, which caused him to be thrown from the motorcycle.
The crash occurred near the border of Libertyville Township and Fremont Township in Lake County. The Speed Limit on Route 137 (Buckley Road) is 55 MPH in both directions near the crash scene, according to Google Maps street view images. Route 137 is a two-lane rural highway with a left turn lane for eastbound traffic and a right turn lane for westbound traffic. There is a slight left-hand curve for westbound traffic approaching the ramp intersection. There are no stop signs or stoplights for Route 137 traffic. The ramp is a two-way traffic ramp with an on-ramp lane from US-45 SOUTH and an off-ramp lane to US-45 SOUTH.
No rain was reported at NWS observation stations at nearby airports at the time of the crash.
